German U18 handball team crowned European champions

Germany's U18 handball team has been crowned European champions, securing a dominant 36:27 victory over Slovenia in the final held in Belgrade. The win marks another significant achievement for the German Handball Federation (DHB) in its youth development programs.

The German squad, coached by Erik Wudtke, avenged a previous narrow loss to Slovenia in the main round, demonstrating their resilience and tactical prowess. The team featured notable players such as Elvis Kretzschmar, son of handball legend Stefan Kretzschmar, and Kalle Gaugisch, son of the women's national coach Markus Gaugisch.

This latest triumph extends a remarkable run of success for German youth handball. Earlier in July, the U20 women's team won the World Championship, and the U19 team secured the European Championship last year. The men's program has also seen considerable success, with both the U17 and U19 teams capturing World Championship titles in the previous year.

DHB sports director Ingo Meckes commented on the string of victories, stating that they show the federation is "on the right track." He stressed the importance of "sustainable promotion" of young talent, which he believes can only be achieved through collaboration with clubs.

During the final match, Germany pulled away decisively in the second half. Goalkeeper Tobias Dengler played a crucial role with key saves, helping the team establish a commanding 20:11 lead. Germany maintained a significant advantage, even going over ten minutes without conceding a goal, effectively sealing the victory early in the second half.
