Germany, Berlin Vow Better Protection for Queer Community After CSD Attack

Berlin and the German federal government are strengthening protections for the queer community in response to a recent attack during the Christopher Street Day (CSD) celebrations. The move aims to ensure queer individuals feel safe throughout Germany, according to Berlin's Senator for Anti-Discrimination, Cansel Kiziltepe.

Federal Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig has reiterated her proposal to amend the Basic Law, Germany's constitution, to include an explicit prohibition of discrimination based on sexual identity. This initiative follows recent announcements aimed at addressing anti-queer violence.

Berlin's Interior Senator Iris Spranger emphasized the need to carefully identify areas where increased protection is required for queer people. The city has already established important structures that will be further developed to implement concrete improvements and anchor successful approaches nationwide. Potential measures include integrating queer individuals into the victim support law, intensifying prosecution of hate crimes, providing reliable funding for queer counseling services, and establishing dedicated contact persons within all police departments.

Queer education and youth work are also slated for strengthening across all federal states. Florian Winkler-Schwarz, managing director of the LSVD queer diversity association, stated that anti-queer violence poses a serious threat to the free development and participation of queer individuals. He called for a reliable infrastructure, consistent prosecution, and the sustainable implementation of Berlin's state strategy for queer safety.

The attack on July 25th involved a 21-year-old man who drove into several pedestrians in Berlin's Tiergarten before allegedly injuring others with a machete. One woman died, and at least 31 people were injured, seven severely. The perpetrator, identified as an Islamist, was shot dead by police the day after the incident.
