Germany faces daily 'hybrid warfare' attacks, minister warns after explosive drone found at airport

Germany is under constant "hybrid warfare" from foreign powers, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated Sunday, describing a daily barrage of espionage, sabotage, cyberattacks, and covert operations. These actions aim to destabilize Germany politically and socially by inciting fear.

Dobrindt's remarks came after a suspected attack involving an explosive-laden drone was discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport. While the minister did not identify specific countries, some German lawmakers have suggested Russia's involvement, particularly given its ongoing war with Ukraine since 2022.

The Russian embassy in Berlin has vehemently denied any connection to the Leipzig incident, labeling it a "fabricated provocation" and another instance of baseless accusations against Russia. Dobrindt, a member of the conservative Christian Social Union, had previously characterized the Leipzig event as a "hybrid attack scenario," leaving open the possibility of foreign state involvement.

Adding to the concerns, Germany's armed forces reported spotting two drones over a military base in Mechernich, western Germany, late Thursday. In response to these escalating threats, Dobrindt highlighted Germany's efforts to expand drone research as part of its defense strategy.
