Germany's New Ambassador to Serbia Arrives from Moscow

Anke Holstein officially began her role as Germany's new ambassador to Serbia on August 17, 2026, presenting her credentials to Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić. Holstein succeeds Anke Konrad in the ambassadorship.

Holstein arrives in Belgrade after a three-and-a-half-year posting in Moscow, where she served as charge d'affaires and minister-counselor during a period of complex relations between Germany and Russia. Her diplomatic career spans decades and includes significant experience in the Western Balkans.

Prior to her Moscow assignment, Holstein was Germany's ambassador to North Macedonia from 2020 to 2023. She also served as deputy ambassador in Albania (2014-2018) and held positions in the German embassies in Slovenia (2003-2007) and Sarajevo (1998-2001).

Between diplomatic missions, Holstein worked at the German Foreign Ministry in Berlin from 2001 to 2003, focusing on policy toward Eastern Europe and the Western Balkans. She later served as a political advisor within the European Commission's Directorate-General for External Relations and the European External Action Service from 2009.

Holstein, born in 1967, graduated in Romance languages and completed her diplomatic academy training in Bonn. She is fluent in English, French, Serbo-Croatian, Albanian, Macedonian, Slovenian, and Russian. She is also a mother to twin daughters.
