Germany's World Cup Exit Leads to Coach Nagelsmann's Resignation; Klopp Eyed as Successor

Julian Nagelsmann has resigned as the head coach of the German national football team, just four days after their disappointing elimination from the World Cup. German media reported on Friday that Nagelsmann, who had a contract until 2028, agreed to step down following discussions with the German Football Association (DFB). The DFB reportedly requested his resignation after a three-hour meeting on Thursday to discuss the team's latest World Cup failure. Nagelsmann, 38, took charge of the team in September 2023. The DFB is expected to move quickly to find a successor, with former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, 59, widely considered the frontrunner. Klopp, who previously managed Mainz and Borussia Dortmund, achieved legendary status at Liverpool, leading them to their first Premier League title in 30 years in 2020 and the Champions League the year before. He announced his departure from Liverpool in January 2024, having managed the club since 2015. Since January 2025, he has served as Global Football Director for Red Bull. The challenge facing Nagelsmann's successor is immense, as Germany has suffered three consecutive major setbacks in the World Cup, exiting in the group stage in 2018 and 2022, and now being eliminated in the Round of 32 by Paraguay. This latest defeat, decided by a penalty shootout, occurred in Boston.
