Germany suspends Sunday truck driving bans due to Rhine drought

Germany is implementing an urgent measure to safeguard its supply chains by temporarily suspending driving bans for certain trucks on Sundays and holidays. This decision comes in response to the prolonged low water levels on the Rhine River, a critical artery for freight transport.

The states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland are leading this initiative, allowing goods that cannot be transported or can only be transported with difficulty by river to be rerouted more easily to road transport. This exception is crucial for maintaining the flow of goods when river navigation is severely restricted.

According to the Ministry of Transport in Mainz, the exemption applies to transports directly or indirectly linked to the low Rhine water levels or the resulting alternative transport arrangements. Even empty journeys connected to these transports are covered. The goal is to provide flexibility for other transport methods to compensate for the reduced river traffic.

Markus Wolf, state secretary for transport, stated, "We are creating the necessary maneuvering room for this." Rhineland-Palatinate has coordinated this exception with other federal states to ensure a unified approach. The measure is effective immediately and will remain in place until September 30, though it does not apply to extraordinary or heavy transports.

Other states, like North Rhine-Westphalia, are also open to the temporary suspension, provided it is agreed upon at the federal level. Transport Minister Oliver Krischer noted that some companies face production stoppages due to the limited shipping capacity. He emphasized that similar measures have been implemented before under special circumstances, highlighting the need for flexibility to mitigate the impact of the Rhine's low water levels.
