Germany, UK leaders pledge continued Ukraine support

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz spoke with newly appointed British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, emphasizing the desire to continue close cooperation between Germany and the United Kingdom. The conversation followed Burnham's earlier calls with U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

During their call, Merz and Burnham reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Ukraine against the Russian invasion. They pledged to continue providing comprehensive assistance and to increase pressure on Russia. Both leaders also expressed their intent to further advance the Kensington Treaty, a friendship agreement signed by Merz and Burnham's predecessor, Keir Starmer, a year prior.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Burnham has been actively shaping his new cabinet. Key appointments include Wes Streeting as the new Defense Minister, Alex Norris taking over the Ministry of Justice, Angela Eagle heading the Environment Department, and Miatta Fahnbulleh appointed as Energy Minister. These appointments signal the new administration's direction and priorities as it takes office.
