Ghana's Black Stars have etched their name in World Cup history by securing their sixth victory at the tournament, a feat that equals Nigeria's record for the most wins by an African nation. The milestone was achieved with a dramatic 1-0 win over Panama in their opening Group L match on Thursday.

Ghana have become only the second African nation to record six wins at the FIFA World Cup after edging Panama 1-0 in their opening Group L match on Thursday, equalling Nigeria’s long-standing record.

Caleb Yirenkyi scored the decisive goal in the 95th minute at Toronto Stadium, Canada, after a surging run and assist from Brandon Thomas-Asante. The late goal denied Panama their first-ever World Cup point in only their fourth appearance since debuting in 2018. The result places Ghana at the top of Group L, level on points with England, ahead of their next fixture.

With this win, Ghana now boasts six victories from 16 World Cup matches, drawing level with Nigeria's tally of six wins from 21 games. Cameroon follows with five wins from 26 matches, though they, like Nigeria, failed to qualify for the 2026 tournament. Morocco sits fourth with five wins from 23 games and has the opportunity to surpass Nigeria's record during the current tournament, having famously reached the semi-finals in Qatar 2022.

Senegal also holds a notable record with five wins from just 13 matches, reaching the quarter-finals in 2002.
