Ghana reappoints Carlos Queiroz as Black Stars coach

Carlos Queiroz is back in charge of Ghana’s Black Stars after the Ghana Football Association decided to reappoint the Portuguese coach for another spell. The 73-year-old had taken over in April and led Ghana at this year’s FIFA World Cup, where the team reached the last 32 before losing 1-0 to Colombia.

Queiroz appeared to announce his departure on social media after the defeat. Following internal discussions, however, the GFA chose to bring him back. The association did not disclose the length of his new contract, saying only that he would prepare the Black Stars for “a successful new phase on the international stage.”

The GFA said Queiroz’s international experience, technical expertise, and knowledge of the team made him well placed to lead Ghana into its next chapter. He has previously managed Iran, Portugal, and Egypt at major tournaments, as well as South Africa, Colombia, and Qatar. He also served twice as an assistant manager at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson.

His immediate assignment will be Ghana’s qualification campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to begin later this month. The Black Stars are in Group C with Ivory Coast, The Gambia, and Somalia. The dates and venues for their first two matches have not yet been announced, and the GFA said it would provide more details about Queiroz’s mandate later.
