Ghent's 'Superschool' Approved After Appeal Rejection

The province of East Flanders has officially approved the construction of a large-scale educational complex in Ghent, Belgium, dubbed a "superschool." This decision follows the rejection of an appeal lodged by opponents of the project, clearing the way for the Connected school group to proceed with preparations for the new facility on the former Fluvius site.

The superschool is designed to be a significant educational hub, intended to host over 2,000 students and provide a new workplace for 400 staff members. It will consolidate five existing secondary schools: OLVI Gent, Nieuwen Bosch, HTI Sint-Antonius, IVIO Binnenhof, and Sint-Lievenscollege Business. The project aims to create a robust learning environment that offers ample opportunities for student development and provides staff with supportive infrastructure.

Despite the provincial approval, the appeal process has introduced uncertainty regarding the project's timeline. Initially, the new complex was slated for completion and use by 2028. However, the delay caused by the appeal means this target is likely unachievable, and Connected is now reassessing a feasible timeline for the school's opening.

Concerns raised by opponents included potential increases in traffic pressure in the surrounding area. However, the provincial authorities decided not to uphold the appeal, granting the superschool the green light. Bart Serras of Connected expressed significant satisfaction with the decision, emphasizing the investment in the future of education and the creation of an environment conducive to both learning and teaching.
