Ghent Town Crier Celebrates 50th Gentse Feesten: From Street Performer to Festival Opener

Ghent's town crier, Anthony Stolarek, is marking a significant milestone: his 50th year at the Gentse Feesten. Stolarek's journey with the festival began half a century ago as a street entertainer, playing his bagpipes to liven up the crowds. Now, he holds the honor of officially opening the festivities as a Belleman.

Since 2021, Stolarek has been one of three official town criers in Ghent. His involvement over the decades has been extensive, working both day and night shifts for the full 10-day duration of the festival. He described his routine: "After the standard 10 days, I always have to rest for 24 hours, and then I'm ready to go again."

This year's opening ceremony marked a special moment for Stolarek. He shared that the town criers' schedule is packed, with tasks often running from morning until late evening. "The nice thing is that you come into contact with many people," Stolarek said. "You work with people from all regions and countries. The belleman tradition is of Anglo-Saxon origin. From people from that region, you get a lot of extra appreciation. I can then promote the city of Ghent. Because for them, it is still a hidden gem, an unknown pearl."

Stolarek became a town crier after being asked to take on the role. Although he was approached before 2021, his previous job prevented him from accepting. However, upon his retirement, the offer was extended again, and he accepted.
