Ghent University Defends Disciplinary Action Against Professor Cofnas Amid International Criticism

Ghent University (UGent) is defending its disciplinary proceedings against professor Nathan Cofnas, pushing back against international criticism that the process infringes upon academic freedom. Rector Petra De Sutter asserted that the university upholds academic freedom and that public commentary on the case is often based on insufficient knowledge.

De Sutter emphasized that the university must adhere to legal regulations, internal procedures, and the confidentiality of personnel matters. "I realize that people may not understand that," she stated, referring to the university's reticence in disclosing details from the preliminary investigation. "But those who draw conclusions without knowing the case do so at their own risk."

The controversy surrounding Nathan Cofnas, an American researcher described as a 'race realist' and opponent of equal opportunities policies, intensified following the death of Cambridge professor Jason Arday. Cofnas had accused Arday of plagiarism in an online article, which led to an investigation by Cambridge University and Arday's subsequent resignation. Arday was later found dead.
