Giant 2-meter iguana spotted in Taiwan's Changhua County

A colossal green iguana, measuring an impressive 2 meters in length, has been sighted along the Mailiao River in Changhua County, Taiwan. Described by locals as an 'epic Godzilla,' the reptile's sheer size has startled residents and raised alarms among environmentalists about the growing presence of invasive species.

This sighting follows months of reports about a significant population of green iguanas inhabiting the area. The discovery of such a large individual underscores the potential for these invasive reptiles to establish a strong foothold. Green iguanas are classified as a harmful invasive species in Taiwan due to their rapid reproduction rates and lack of natural predators in the wild.

Ecological photographer Minos, who has documented iguanas in the region for the past year, noted sightings ranging from 20 centimeters to 1.2 meters. However, the recent 2-meter specimen far surpasses previous observations. "When I went to photograph nature again today, I was shocked to discover this huge 2-meter-long green iguana, its size far exceeding anything I had seen before, which was truly shocking," Minos stated.

According to agricultural data, adult green iguanas can reach up to 2 meters in length and weigh between 6 to 8 kilograms. Females can lay between 20 to 80 eggs per clutch, contributing to their rapid proliferation. Minos expressed concern that areas like southern Taiwan, particularly Tainan, are already struggling with invasive iguanas, with captured animals reportedly piling up. He fears that if effective control measures are not implemented promptly in Changhua County, it could become another area overwhelmed by the unchecked spread of this invasive species, posing a severe threat to local agriculture and biodiversity.
