Gibraltar names airport for Jewish political trailblazer who was first-ever mayor, chief minister

Gibraltar International Airport will be renamed Joshua Hassan Gibraltar International Airport, honoring Sir Joshua Hassan, the British territory's first mayor and chief minister who died in 1997. Hassan was a prominent member of Gibraltar's Jewish community.

His leadership and lifelong service to Gibraltar helped shape the modern Gibraltar we know today.

The current Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, described Hassan as the "Father of the Gibraltarians" and a "towering figure in our history." The government stated that the renaming will be a "lasting tribute" to Hassan's "extraordinary contribution to Gibraltar and to generations of Gibraltarians."

Hassan's daughter, Fleur Hassan-Nahoum, who previously served as Jerusalem's deputy mayor, called the renaming a "beautiful and fitting tribute." She highlighted her father's dedication to advancing the freedoms and rights of the Gibraltarian people and noted his standing as one of the "most prominent Jewish public servants in the modern Commonwealth."
