Gijón hosts traveling exhibition celebrating EL PAÍS's 50 years

Gijón is now hosting 'Momentos,' a traveling photography exhibition marking the 50th anniversary of the Spanish newspaper EL PAÍS. The exhibition, which has already toured several Spanish cities, will be on display at Naval Azul, a seaside venue, from July 16 to July 30.

Curated by Marisa Flórez, a photographer and former graphic editor for EL PAÍS, 'Momentos' presents 50 impactful photographs. These images span five decades, tracing the history, current events, and collective memory captured since the newspaper's inception on May 4, 1976. The exhibition underscores the crucial role of photojournalism in documenting significant moments.

Notable images include Berliners dismantling the Berlin Wall in 1989, an athlete at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Pedro Almodóvar and Penélope Cruz during the promotion of 'Todo sobre mi madre,' and a passenger plane approaching the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001. The exhibition also features local Gijón scenes, such as workers' resistance at Naval Gijón in 2007 and a world record attempt for pouring cider on Poniente beach in 2006.

Each photograph is accompanied by a caption detailing its title and author. Visitors can access additional content and audio explanations, produced by SER (a radio station within the Prisa Group, EL PAÍS's publisher), via QR codes. Flórez described the exhibition as "nostalgia and horizon," representing "life and history."

'Momentos' is part of EL PAÍS's 50th-anniversary program. After Gijón, it will travel to other Spanish cities, including Barcelona, Santander, and Bilbao. The exhibition is globally sponsored by Telefónica and receives institutional support from the Gijón City Council.
