Gironde wildfires: Five days of inferno threaten Bordeaux outskirts

France is grappling with devastating wildfires in the Gironde region, west of Bordeaux, which have raged for five days, consuming 42,000 hectares of land and forcing the evacuation of 220,000 people. The inferno, which began Wednesday in Saumos, is now threatening the outskirts of Bordeaux, presenting an immense challenge for the thousands of firefighters battling the blaze.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez described France's overall situation regarding fires as "very unfavorable." While fires are also affecting the Var, Landes, and Corsica regions, the Gironde fires are the most significant, spreading rapidly through dense pine forests near the Arcachon basin.

The fire's origin is traced to a brush-clearing operation by a company near power lines in Saumos around midday Wednesday. Despite initial containment efforts by the company's teams, the fire quickly escalated, described by firefighters as "very virulent" and exhibiting "a real tornado of fire" as it spread towards Le Porge and then Lège-Cap-Ferret.

Over 2,500 firefighters, 1,500 military personnel, and nearly 1,200 police officers and gendarmes have been mobilized to combat the escalating crisis. The situation remains critical, with the flames proving extremely difficult to control.
