Glabbeek's first social housing units are coming: "Huge delays due to procedures and administration"

Glabbeek is moving forward with its first social housing development, transforming the old library site in Kapellen into 18 social rental apartments. This initiative aims to address a pressing need for affordable housing within the community.

Local councilor Yvette Sterkendries highlighted the necessity of these homes, stating, "These social homes are absolutely necessary in our village." She noted that approximately 50 families are currently on the waiting list for housing. The new development will include four specially adapted units designed for seniors, with the allocation of apartments prioritizing existing residents who have lived in Glabbeek for a long time.

The project is scheduled for completion in the autumn of 2027, with the first rentals expected to begin in early 2028. This development is part of Glabbeek's commitment to meeting its Binding Social Objective (BSO), which mandates the creation of 57 social rental homes by 2042.

However, the path to providing social housing has not been without its challenges. Mayor Peter Reekmans pointed out significant delays in other projects, such as the "De Melkroos" social housing neighborhood and the "Baekveld" residential area. These delays are attributed to procedural complexities and administrative hurdles, including issues with the Flemish Social Housing Company's approach and ongoing legal disputes.
