Glacier collapse threatens Swiss municipality of Randa

The Swiss municipality of Randa is on high alert as authorities monitor a hanging glacier on the Weisshorn, which shows signs of accelerated movement and potential collapse. The increased activity has prompted the municipality to intensify its surveillance of the Weisshorn-Ost glacier.

Officials have established a danger zone that is currently inaccessible and warned that ice collapses could occur in the coming days, potentially reaching into this marked area. While most of the village lies outside the immediate danger zone, some buildings are situated within its boundaries. Residents and visitors are urged to strictly adhere to the existing cordons and instructions.

This situation evokes memories of a devastating rockslide that struck Randa over 30 years ago. In the spring of 1991, 30 million cubic meters of rock cascaded into the valley in three phases, causing extensive damage. The massive debris cone from that event remains visible today. The rockslides dammed the Mattervispa river, flooding parts of Randa and damaging infrastructure.

The 1991 disaster was a turning point, leading to the development of new technologies and measures for the early detection of rockfalls in Switzerland. The ongoing monitoring of the Weisshorn glacier reflects the continued efforts to prevent future tragedies in this geologically active region.
