Glacier collapse triggers devastating floods in Tibet and Nepal, hundreds dead or missing

Catastrophic floods in Nepal and Tibet, caused by a glacier collapse, have left at least 165 people dead and 826 missing, according to Nepalese authorities. The disaster struck the Rasuwa district and surrounding areas, with recovered bodies found across multiple downstream districts. The ongoing search for the missing includes 85 security force members and 162 residents from Rasuwa and Nuwakot.

The human toll is compounded by the large number of missing tourists, with 579 unaccounted for, including 466 foreigners and 113 Nepalis. Rescuers have saved 104 people, primarily in the affected northern districts. Search operations resumed early this morning amidst challenging conditions.

Chinese authorities reported 260 foreign nationals among 558 people still missing after a landslide on the Nepal-Tibet border. These figures are separate from Nepal's reported numbers, making it difficult to ascertain if there is overlap. The U.S. Geological Survey officially confirmed that the floods were caused by a glacier collapse and a subsequent debris flow, which had catastrophic downstream effects. This confirmation came after initial confusion, with seismic tremors measured but no earthquake recorded.

In response to the crisis, the United States has pledged $500,000 in aid to Nepal through Catholic Relief Services. This assistance will support the provision of emergency shelters, essential supplies, and water and sanitation services to the flood-affected communities. The scale of the disaster is still being assessed due to the remote and difficult-to-access nature of the affected region.
