"Gladiator" Film Screened Live with Orchestra at Rome's Circus Maximus

Rome's ancient Circus Maximus transformed into a cinematic and musical spectacle as it hosted a screening of Ridley Scott's 2000 epic, "Gladiator." The event featured a live performance of the film's iconic score by the Orchestra and Choir of the Rome Opera House, perfectly synchronized with the on-screen action. This unique presentation unfolded over two nights, drawing an audience of 6,000 spectators each evening in the heart of ancient Rome. The musical direction was led by Swiss conductor Ludwig Wicki, with a special appearance by Australian vocalist Lisa Gerrard, who co-composed the score with German composer Hans Zimmer. Over 150 musicians and singers brought the original soundtrack to life in real-time. This ambitious production is a highlight of the Rome Opera's summer season, which extends through July 31 and includes a diverse program of opera, dance, and concerts. "Gladiator" has seen previous screenings in Rome, including a 2018 charity event at the Colosseum featuring actor Russell Crowe and a public showing at the Circus Maximus itself. The film was also part of an open-air cinema series at the Colosseum in 2024. The Circus Maximus, once a venue for chariot races, continues to solidify its role as a major summer cultural hub, a trend amplified during the pandemic years and historically hosting significant concerts, such as Bruce Springsteen's in 2016. The current event underscores the venue's enduring appeal for large-scale cultural experiences.
