Glasgow 2026: Amusan leads Team Nigeria’s medal chase on Day 7

Team Nigeria is set to continue its impressive performance at the Commonwealth Games on Day 7, with athletics stars, including world record holder Tobi Amusan, leading the charge. Following a day that yielded a world record and two additional medals, Nigeria enters the day as the top-ranked African nation on the medals table.

Nigeria has secured seven gold, five silver, and two bronze medals so far. This success includes Goodness Nwachukwu's world record in the women's discus throw and Jessica Oji's silver medal in the shot put. The focus now shifts to the athletics track, where Tobi Amusan will compete in the women's 100m hurdles, aiming for another Commonwealth Games title.

Nigeria also boasts strong contenders in the 400m events. Samuel Ogazi and Edidiong Udo qualified for the men's semi-finals, with Udo making a notable international debut. In the women's 400m semi-finals, Patience Okon-George, Esther Elo Joseph, and Ella Onojuvwevwo will compete for a spot in the final.

Further medal hopes rest on Chukwuebuka Enekwechi in the men's shot put final. The sprint program continues with Udodi Onwuzurike in the men's 200m semi-finals, and Jennifer Chukwuka Obi and Olayinka Olajide advancing to the women's 200m final. African champion Chinecherem Nnamdi will participate in the men's javelin qualification, while Jami Schlueter begins the decathlon.

Para-athletes Unyima Uwak and Obiageri Amaechi will also compete in their respective finals.
