Glasgow 2026: Australian High Commission congratulates Team Nigeria on historic campaign

Team Nigeria's remarkable performance at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games has earned congratulations from the Australian High Commission in Nigeria. The Nigerian contingent concluded the event as Africa's top-performing nation, securing an impressive seventh-place finish overall.

Congratulations to Team Australia on topping the medal table at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games for a third consecutive Games.

Nigeria's campaign yielded 10 gold, seven silver, and seven bronze medals. This success was highlighted by several historic achievements in athletics. Samuel Ogazi became the first Nigerian man to win the Commonwealth Games 400 metres title, while Ezekiel Nathaniel made history as Nigeria's first Commonwealth champion in the men's 400m hurdles. Chukwuebuka Enekwechi also broke new ground by winning Nigeria's first men's shot put title at the Games.

We also celebrate Team Nigeria, Africa’s top-performing nation, on an outstanding seventh-place finish.

The athletics team was a significant contributor to Nigeria's medal haul. Ruth Usoro secured a silver medal in the women's long jump, and Udodi Onwuzurike claimed silver in the men's 200m. Ella Onojuvwevwo ended Nigeria's 32-year wait for a medal in the women's 400m by winning bronze.

The Australian High Commission proudly recognises the dedication, talent and sportsmanship of athletes from both countries.

Beyond athletics, Nigeria also achieved success in weightlifting, para sports, and judo, marking one of its most successful Commonwealth Games outings in recent years. The Games featured athletes from 74 nations and territories, competing across 10 sports.
