Glen Hansard, Star of Film 'Once,' Dies at 56 in Motorcycle Accident

Glen Hansard, the acclaimed Irish singer-songwriter and actor best known for his role in the 2007 film 'Once,' has died at the age of 56. His passing occurred early Tuesday morning following a traffic accident involving a motorcycle in Dublin, as confirmed by his agency.

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin paid tribute to Hansard, stating, "I feel deep sorrow at the news of the death of a talented musician and actor who has made a significant contribution to Irish culture for many years." Fans have also taken to social media to express their grief and pay homage to the artist.

According to Irish police, Hansard died in a single-vehicle motorcycle accident in west Dublin. Emergency services responded to the scene around 4:30 a.m. and provided initial treatment, but Hansard was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hansard began his musical journey in his teenage years, performing as a busker on the streets of Dublin. In 1990, he founded the Irish rock band The Frames. He also pursued a solo career and collaborated with Czech musician Markéta Irglová in the duo 'The Swell Season.'

His international breakthrough came with 'Once,' a low-budget film shot on a camcorder, which told the story of a street musician falling in love with an immigrant woman. The film featured several songs co-written and performed by Hansard and Irglová, including the Academy Award-winning "Falling Slowly." The film was later adapted into a Broadway musical, winning eight Tony Awards in 2012, including Best Musical.
