The upcoming Okpekpe International 10km Road Race is generating significant buzz, not just within Nigeria but across the globe. Organizers are grappling with an unprecedented flood of participation requests from elite athletes eager to compete in what has become West Africa's premier road running event. This overwhelming interest, particularly from East African powerhouses like Kenya and Ethiopia, and European contenders, highlights the race's elevated status on the international athletics calendar.

Race director Zack Amodu shared the challenges posed by this surge. While the influx of applications is a testament to the race's growing reputation, it also presents logistical hurdles. He emphasized that adhering to World Athletics regulations, which prohibit direct dealings with elite athletes without agents, is paramount to maintaining the race's Gold Label status. This strict selection process ensures that only top-tier athletes are prioritized, preserving the competition's quality.

But we cannot confirm them because most do not have managers, and it is against World Athletics rules to deal directly with elite athletes without agents.

Since achieving its label status in 2015, the Okpekpe race has solidified its position as a leading African road event. Its unique course and high organizational standards, endorsed by World Athletics technical delegate Norrie Williamson, contribute to its global appeal. Beyond the elite competition, the race retains deep local significance, championed by figures like former Edo State governor Adams Oshiomhole, who played a crucial role in developing the infrastructure.
