Gloria Steinem, trailblazing women’s liberation leader, dies at 92

Gloria Steinem, whose journalism and activism helped shape the modern women’s liberation movement, has died at 92. She died peacefully at her home in New York City, surrounded by people who loved her, the Gloria Steinem Foundation said. The cause of death was not immediately known.

The foundation also cited a passage from Steinem’s forthcoming book, An Unexpected Life, about the New York brownstone where she had lived for more than 50 years. The book, along with her plans for the home to become a center for social justice movements, represented part of what she hoped would continue beyond her lifetime.

Steinem co-founded Ms. Magazine, the first major publication owned, run and written by women. Newsweek called her “The New Woman” in 1971. Ms. became a leading platform for equal rights and drew attention to inclusion, media representation and social justice issues affecting women and girls.

As a journalist, Steinem challenged the idea that women’s concerns belonged outside debates about politics and war. She campaigned for voting rights and female candidates, and supported reproductive freedom, protection from domestic violence and greater opportunities for women in media. Take Our Daughters to Work Day, begun by the Ms. Foundation for Women to challenge gender stereotypes, later grew into a global initiative involving millions of children.
