Goesan youths collect forgotten foreign coins to help neighbors in need

Foreign coins left in drawers and office cupboards are being turned into a local aid campaign in Goesan, North Chungcheong Province.

The Cheongjeong Goesan Youth Saemaeul Association delivered a collection box for unused foreign coins to the Goesan-eup Administrative Welfare Center on Aug. 31. The group plans to place boxes at all 10 township and neighborhood welfare centers in the county by next month.

Foreign coins sitting unused in homes can become a resource to help isolated neighbors when they accumulate one by one. We hope all residents will take part.

The association will collect the coins from the boxes once a month and exchange them through a bank. The proceeds will then support neighbors in need. Although foreign coins are the main focus, the campaign will also accept Korean coins and banknotes.

Association chairman Jung Seung-hwan said, "Foreign coins sitting unused in homes can become a resource to help isolated neighbors when they accumulate one by one. We hope all residents will take part." Goesan county official Park Sang-mi said the campaign responds to the growing frequency of overseas travel and asked residents to participate.

As overseas travel has become more frequent, we launched this campaign to collect hidden coins at home and help neighbors. Foreign coins are the focus, but we will also collect Korean coins and banknotes. We hope many people will participate.
