“Golf emperor” Tiger Woods receives five-year driving ban after rollover crash

Tiger Woods has been barred from driving for five years after pleading guilty to reckless driving in connection with a March rollover crash in Florida. A Martin County court also fined him $1,500.

Woods initially faced a driving-under-the-influence charge. Prosecutors later decided the evidence was insufficient and applied only the reckless-driving charge. Judge Darren Steele warned him that if he drove again for any reason, he would immediately return to jail.

The crash occurred near Woods’ home on a two-lane road in Jupiter Island, Martin County. His pickup truck collided with another pickup towing a small trailer and overturned. Woods climbed out through the passenger-side window and was not seriously injured, according to the report.

A breath test at the scene was negative, but Woods refused a urine test. Police arrested him and held him under state law for eight hours before he posted bail. The incident came as he prepared to return after back surgery. He subsequently announced that he would stop competing and did not take the role of captain of the U.S. team for next year’s Ryder Cup.

Woods has faced similar incidents in 2009, 2017 and 2021. The latest court appearance also drew attention because he arrived with his girlfriend, Vanessa Trump, the former daughter-in-law of U.S. President Donald Trump.
