Gombe IRS generated N20.7bn in six months - Official

The Gombe State Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has reported a strong performance, generating over N20.7 billion in revenue during the first half of 2026. The agency is on track to meet its annual target of approximately N39 billion by year-end. Aisha Adamu, the Service's Chairman, highlighted this achievement, noting consistent year-on-year growth in internally generated revenue.

Our target is around N39bn for the year. So, as of date, we’ve done over, I think, N20.7bn.

Adamu attributed the success to several key factors, including enhanced tax administration processes, ongoing staff training programs, effective collaboration with relevant stakeholders, and a notable increase in taxpayer compliance. "When we talk about the Internal Revenue Service, our major achievement has to deal with our mandate, which is collecting revenues for the state," Adamu stated. "We have continued to grow our revenue year-on-year from the year we started here. So that is one of our major achievements. We are doing better than the previous year, 2025."

The agency has also prioritized human capital development, exposing its personnel to best practices through both domestic and international training, virtual sessions, and study visits. Furthermore, the Gombe IRS has strengthened collaborations with institutions like the Gombe State Government, security agencies, and the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) to improve intelligence gathering and revenue collection efforts. "While doing that, we’ve been able to also collaborate with some of the stakeholders, such as the GRB, the security forces, the NFIU, where we gather intelligence to do tax collection," Adamu explained.

In addition to revenue collection, the agency has been active in recovering stolen vehicles. During attempts to register them in Gombe State, the IRS recovered more than four stolen vehicles, which were subsequently handed over to the police. Some of these vehicles have been returned to their rightful owners. Adamu urged residents and business owners to fulfill their tax obligations, emphasizing that taxation represents a social contract between citizens and the government.
