Gombe panel submits report on suspended acting director of public prosecutions

A four-volume report into complaints against Gombe State’s suspended Acting Director of Public Prosecutions, Abubakar Jungudo, has reached the governor’s office.

The state Head of Civil Service, Prof. Muazu Shehu, received the report on behalf of Governor Inuwa Yahaya on Sept. 8, 2026. He described the panel’s work as a “noble and sacred duty” carried out with diligence and commitment.

The high-powered panel began work after Jungudo’s suspension. Inaugurated on July 31, it was tasked with investigating the complaints thoroughly, transparently and impartially, in line with due process. Its members included representatives of the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, the Nigerian Bar Association and the Gombe State Ministry of Justice.

The panel was chaired by Justice Haruna Kerengs of the Gombe State High Court. Presenting the report, Kerengs said the volume and complexity of the complaints required an extension of the panel’s deadline. The four volumes contain petitions and responses, evidence and exhibits, proceedings and witness testimony, and the panel’s deliberations, findings and recommendations.

Shehu said scrutiny was essential to strengthening public institutions and maintaining confidence in government. “This is how we build and protect the public service. Scrutiny ensures accountability, checks abuse of privilege, and reinforces quality service delivery by those entrusted with responsibility,” he said. Shehu said the report would be sent promptly to the governor, then dissolved the panel on the governor’s behalf.
