González Nader assumes new diplomatic functions in Europe for Ecuador

Ecuadorian Ambassador Andrea González Nader is set to broaden her diplomatic portfolio, officially representing the nation before the European Union, the European Atomic Energy Community, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. President Daniel Noboa formalized this expansion through two executive decrees on Monday, July 27, 2026.

González Nader, who has served as Ecuador's ambassador to Belgium since December 2025, will now consolidate these European representations into a single diplomatic mission headquartered in Brussels. This strategic move centralizes Ecuador's diplomatic engagement with key European bodies, streamlining its international relations.

The consolidation follows the successful acquisition of necessary international approvals. Luxembourg granted its assent on June 11, 2026, while the European Union and the European Commission confirmed their approval on June 9, 2026. These endorsements allow González Nader to officially assume her expanded responsibilities.

With a background as an environmental management engineer from the University of the Pacific, González Nader has a notable political career in Ecuador. She was the vice-presidential running mate of the late Fernando Villavicencio in 2023 and later ran for president in the 2024 elections. Her political experience also includes candidacies for vice prefect of Guayas in 2019 and for national assembly member in 2021.
