Good weather forecast for Dragon Boat Festival holiday; avoid traffic jams at Sun Moon Lake and Hehuanshan

Taiwan's Ministry of Transportation anticipates sunny weather for the upcoming Dragon Boat Festival holiday, projecting significant crowds at popular tourist destinations like Sun Moon Lake and the Hehuanshan mountain area. To ensure a smooth experience, the Directorate General of Highways (DGH) is urging travelers to plan their journeys carefully and avoid peak travel times.

The three-day holiday, running from June 19 to June 21, is expected to see substantial traffic along the routes to Cingjing Farm and Hehuanshan. For those planning day trips, the DGH recommends arriving before 10 a.m. Visitors staying overnight are advised to enter the area after 3 p.m. to bypass congestion.

Hehuanshan, a high-altitude region with unpredictable weather and limited parking, requires special attention. Travelers are strongly advised to check weather and road conditions, including parking availability, before ascending. The narrow, winding roads of Provincial Highway 14A (台14甲線) necessitate drivers to be well-rested to prevent fatigue.

For those heading to Sun Moon Lake via Provincial Highway 21 (台21線) and 21A (台21甲線), congestion is anticipated between noon and 3 p.m. daily. Day-trippers should aim to arrive before 11 a.m., while overnight guests can enter after 4 p.m. to avoid the worst traffic. A detour is suggested for those traveling from Puli towards Sun Moon Lake: if the Shuili Road section is congested, travelers can turn left at the Jiulong Road intersection onto Provincial Highway 21A towards Ida Thao for a scenic route around the lake.
