Google Maps Reveals 7-Year Affair; Couple Ordered to Pay $250,000 NTD

A seven-year affair between a steelworker and his mistress has been exposed, leading to a court order for them to pay 250,000 New Taiwan dollars to his wife. The couple had been married for nearly 40 years before the extramarital relationship came to light, reportedly facilitated by evidence gathered through Google Maps.

The wife utilized Google Maps' street view and location tracking features to uncover her husband's infidelity. She discovered his car repeatedly parked outside the mistress's residence and obtained photographic evidence of the couple's intimate interactions, including kissing and traveling together. The husband had reportedly left his family to live with the mistress, prompting the wife to seek substantial compensation.

In court, the man and his mistress denied wrongdoing, bizarrely claiming they were merely "close friends." They further alleged that the wife had illegally obtained the intimate photos by hacking into cloud storage. The husband also attempted to justify his cohabitation by claiming he was temporarily staying with the mistress due to his bank accounts being compromised.

However, the Yilan District Court dismissed their claims. Judges ruled that the evidence, including photos of the couple in public and evidence of long-term cohabitation and kissing, was legally obtained and demonstrated a clear breach of marital fidelity. The court found their "friends" defense unconvincing, stating their actions far exceeded the societal understanding of platonic friendship and severely damaged the wife's marriage. The court ordered the pair to pay 250,000 NTD in damages, considering the wife's unpaid labor, the husband's income of 100,000-200,000 NTD per month, and the mistress's income of approximately 100,000 NTD per month, along with the severe emotional distress inflicted upon the wife.
