Google raises cloud storage subscription price by 51.72% in Nigeria

Google is raising the price of its Google One cloud storage subscription for the Standard plan by approximately 51.72% in Nigeria. The new pricing will take effect on September 22, with the monthly subscription for the 200 GB plan increasing from N2,900 to N4,400.

The technology giant communicated the price adjustment to customers via email on Sunday. Google One offers users additional cloud storage shared across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. The company stated that while prices may change, customers' data and existing storage capacity and benefits will remain unaffected. Subscribers will be automatically charged the new price, plus applicable taxes, at their next billing date unless they cancel their subscription.

This price increase is part of a broader adjustment announced in July, which listed Nigeria among countries including Algeria, Egypt, Pakistan, and Turkey where Google One plan prices would rise. New members in these markets will subscribe at the revised rates. Google accounts come with 15GB of free storage, with paid plans extending this to 100GB or more, offering access to AI features, support experts, and shareable benefits.

The price hike comes amid widespread complaints from Nigerians about the rising costs of digital products and services, including telecommunications data and airtime. Telecom operators, such as Airtel, have launched campaigns to highlight data consumption patterns, with cloud services and storage backups identified as significant contributors to data usage.
