Google is finally addressing a long-standing user request by introducing the ability to change one's Gmail address without the cumbersome process of deleting an account and starting over. This much-anticipated feature, hinted at in support page updates last December, is now closer to widespread availability, offering a significant simplification for users who wish to update their email identity.

For years, individuals stuck with an outdated or perhaps even embarrassing Gmail address created in their youth have been unable to modify it. This new tool promises to eliminate that "tedious complication." The updated support pages confirm that users whose Google account addresses end in @gmail.com may be able to change it to another @gmail.com address. However, Google cautions that the rollout is gradual, and the option might not yet be accessible to everyone.

Changing the address is reportedly straightforward: navigate to 'Personal info' in your account settings, select the 'Email' tab, and then choose 'Change Google account email address.' After entering the new address and confirming, the change should take effect. Google states that the old username will become an alias, and emails sent to both addresses will be received. While users can revert to their old address, they won't be able to create a new Gmail address for 12 months after changing it. Google also advises backing up data as a precaution, although account data like photos and messages should remain unaffected.
