Gotthard Tunnel Sees 10km Traffic Jam as Nearby Regions Express Anger

Traffic jams extended 10 kilometers (6 miles) at the Gotthard road tunnel on Sunday morning, resulting in a 1 hour and 40-minute wait. This follows a 20-kilometer (12-mile) backup on Saturday. The congestion, stretching between Erstfeld and Göschenen in the canton of Uri, is a common occurrence during holiday travel periods on the north-south axis.

Authorities are advising travelers to avoid this route and consider alternatives. Recommended detours include the A13 via the San Bernardino Pass, the A9 through Simplon and Grand-Saint-Bernard, or transporting cars via Lötschberg. These options aim to alleviate the pressure on the main Gotthard route.

However, the persistent holiday traffic and attempts to reroute vehicles are fueling anger in the affected regions. Residents are growing increasingly frustrated with the constant disruptions caused by vacationers passing through their areas.
