Government brings political committee together to shape Malvinas-related bills

The government will bring Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno and Defense Minister Carlos Presti into its political committee on Tuesday as it works to define the bills tied to Argentina's claim over the Malvinas Islands. The meeting could produce decisions on when President Javier Milei's announced initiative will be sent to Congress.

The bill's route has already been settled: it will enter through the Chamber of Deputies. The issue was discussed at Monday's Cabinet meeting, where officials decided that Quirno and Presti should join the political committee because their ministries cover part of the measures Milei announced in a national broadcast last Thursday.

The meeting will be chaired by Presidential Secretary-General Karina Milei and Chief of Cabinet Diego Santilli. Its regular members include Senate Libertarian bloc leader Patricia Bullrich, Chamber of Deputies President Martín Menem, Deputy Chief of Cabinet Ignacio Devitt, Economy Minister Luis Caputo, Communications and Press Secretary Fabián Fernández, Institutional Management Undersecretary Eduardo “Lule” Menem, and presidential adviser Santiago Caputo.

This will be the third time the nine-member committee has expanded to include ministers. Federico Sturzenegger attended the first such meeting, followed by Sandra Pettovello. The government began outlining a political, legal, and communications strategy after the Malvinas issue returned to the center of public debate. The shift followed remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting on Aug. 31 that his administration might withdraw support for Britain in the sovereignty dispute. In his national address, Milei announced tougher sanctions and penalties, marking what the article described as a pronounced change in his position on the dispute with Britain.

Separately, the government has moved forward with a criminal complaint against some companies involved in the Sean Lion project. The filing was assigned by lottery to Federal Court 12 in the Comodoro Py federal courts. Navitas Petroleum, whose capital is Israeli, is the project's main shareholder.
