Government extends state of emergency in Pataz and Loreto for 60 days from August

The Peruvian government has extended the state of emergency in Pataz province, located in the La Libertad region, and in the Loreto region's Putumayo and Mariscal Castilla provinces, along with the districts of Torres Causana and Napo. This extension, lasting 60 days, will take effect on August 4, 2026, according to supreme decrees published in the Official Gazette El Peruano.

The decision is intended to address various security scenarios within the affected areas. In Pataz, the renewed emergency measures are a response to the activities of criminal organizations linked to illegal mining and other forms of violence plaguing the province. The extension in Loreto aims to confront the presence of hostile groups and related threats, while also bolstering migratory and border control efforts.

In Pataz, the state of emergency will continue under the control of the Armed Forces, supported by the National Police of Peru. Mandatory social immobilization will remain in effect between 10:00 PM and 5:00 AM. This measure, established by Supreme Decree No. 113-2026-PCM, aims to sustain actions against organizations engaged in illegal mining and other security threats.

Similarly, the state of emergency in Loreto, formalized by Supreme Decree No. 114-2026-PCM, will also last for 60 days from August 4, 2026. It encompasses the provinces of Putumayo and Mariscal Castilla, and the districts of Torres Causana and Napo. The objective is to combat hostile groups, manage border security, and control migration. The Armed Forces will maintain internal order with police support to achieve these goals.

The decrees were signed by President José María Balcázar, Prime Minister Luis Arroyo, and the relevant ministers, signaling a continued government focus on security in these critical regions.
