Government's crisis management failed, says Fidesz leader Bóka

János Bóka, leader of the Fidesz parliamentary group, asserted that the current government's handling of the energy crisis, particularly during a heatwave, was inadequate. He argued that the administration only managed to prevent a collapse by building upon the energy infrastructure and policies established by previous cabinets.

The government's action plan appears to be to push responsibility onto large consumers and the public.

Bóka criticized the government's strategy, which he described as an attempt to place the burden of crisis management onto major energy consumers and the general public. He contrasted this approach with the crisis management methods of the past 16 years, which he claimed involved establishing advisory bodies months in advance and securing energy through forward transactions at lower costs. The current government, he stated, has not implemented such proactive measures, relying instead on immediate responses.

The previous governments always avoided the emergence of energy crisis situations like this. Thus, such an energy crisis has not occurred in Hungary before.

He highlighted the previous government's contributions, including the expansion of solar panel capacity, which now allows Hungary to be self-sufficient in electricity during sunny hours and even export power. Bóka also pointed to the doubling of cross-border electricity capacities and ongoing development of energy storage and balancing power plants as crucial elements inherited from the past. Without these, he suggested, the energy grid would have failed.

The fact that the Hungarian energy grid did not collapse is due to two things. Firstly, voluntary consumption limitation, and secondly, the energy developments carried out by the previous government.

Furthermore, Bóka commented on recent events, including a scandal involving public media and the election of the president. He implied that the government's focus on these issues, while neglecting substantive crisis management, demonstrated a failure to effectively address the energy situation.
