Government Says Chile Supports Argentina’s Claim to the Falkland Islands

Argentina’s government said Chile has renewed its support for Buenos Aires’ claim to sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas.

The statement came after President Javier Milei met Chilean President José Antonio Kast in Santiago. It was released hours before Milei was due to deliver a nationally broadcast address focused on the Malvinas cause.

According to Argentina’s presidential office, Kast reiterated Chile’s backing for Argentina’s “legitimate sovereignty rights” over the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, as well as the surrounding maritime areas. He also reaffirmed the need for Argentina and the United Kingdom to resume negotiations.

The stated goal is a peaceful and definitive solution to the sovereignty dispute, in line with relevant resolutions of the United Nations and other regional and multilateral forums. Milei, according to the statement, thanked Kast for Chile’s traditional support and for opposing what Argentina describes as unilateral and illegal logistical activities in the disputed area related to oil, gas and fishing resources.

The government’s announcement followed the leaders’ meeting and was presented as a diplomatic expression of support from Chile. The matter remained developing as Milei prepared to address the issue nationally.
