Government task force inspects Birgunj Sugar Factory for potential reopening

A government task force on Tuesday inspected the Birgunj Sugar Factory, a facility that has remained closed for years, to evaluate the possibility of its reopening. The team, formed by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies on August 18, examined the factory's current condition, including its buildings, structures, machinery, and equipment.

The task force will also review past government decisions, previous studies, and reports related to the factory's potential revival. Their assessment will cover the investment required, necessary repairs to infrastructure, and the reusability of existing machinery for production.

Coordinated by Shrikant Yadav, a chief divisional engineer at the ministry, the task force has 15 days to submit its findings. Their report will recommend whether the factory can be reopened, outline the required procedures, and propose an action plan. The factory's prolonged closure has led to the deterioration of its assets and infrastructure, despite repeated discussions about its reopening.
