Governor Lawal appoints new Emir of Zurmi

Aminu Atiku has become the 21st Sarkin Zamfaran Zurmi after Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal approved his appointment as emir of the Zurmi Emirate Council.

The appointment followed consultations and a recommendation from the emirate’s kingmakers, in line with the state’s traditions, customs and laws. Atiku succeeds Alhaji Bello Suleiman, who died on August 31, 2026.

Atiku holds the traditional title of Dangaladiman Zurmi and is the eldest son of the late Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, who served as the 19th Emir of Zurmi. He previously served as sole administrator of Zurmi Local Government Council.

Lawal congratulated the new monarch and urged him to preserve the legacy of his predecessors through leadership focused on peace, justice, unity and the welfare of the people. The governor also asked him to promote peaceful coexistence among the emirate’s communities and work with government and security agencies to strengthen peace and security.

The governor said the Zurmi Emirate, founded centuries ago by the Alibawa clan, holds an important place in Zamfara’s history and has a heritage rooted in scholarship, justice and public service. He pledged state support and said Atiku’s reign could contribute to the emirate’s peace, stability and development.
