Governors spend N512bn on travels, offices

An analysis of state budget implementation reports reveals that 33 Nigerian state governments collectively spent at least N512.10 billion on Government Houses, Governors' Offices, and travel expenses within the first six months of 2026. This figure starkly contrasts with the combined six-month salary of Nigeria's 36 governors, which amounts to just N108.65 million.

The expenditure breakdown shows N420.01 billion allocated to Government House, Governor's Office, and related executive administration costs. An additional N92.09 billion was spent on travel and transport budgets. The total of N512.10 billion represents a mere 0.02 percent of the governors' combined six-month salaries, underscoring the vast difference between personal remuneration and the operational costs of their offices.

This finding emerges amidst ongoing discussions about the official salaries of Nigerian governors. Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori recently stated his monthly salary was N503,000, noting that some senior civil servants earn more. However, the analysis emphasizes that governors' personal salaries are only a small fraction of the broader public expenditure and perks associated with their executive roles.

The budget heads for Government House and Governor's Office encompass a wide array of expenses, including administrative operations, staff, protocol, maintenance, official residences, utilities, security, and other costs necessary for running the executive arm. Similarly, travel and transport spending covers official local and foreign trips for the wider state public service. The figures provide insight into the substantial public cost of maintaining the structures surrounding state governors' offices and raise questions about the total fiscal outlay for these administrative entities.
