Graciela Domínguez acknowledges violence in Sinaloa and promises stronger security after police killing and attack on search activist

Sinaloa's interim governor says the state's worsening violence cannot be hidden. Graciela Domínguez Nava acknowledged the killing of Escuinapa police and traffic deputy director Miguel Antonio Zazueta Páez and the shooting attack against search activist Alma Rosa Roja Medina.

Speaking during a working tour in Mazatlán, Domínguez said residents are experiencing the violence directly. Recognizing the situation, she said, allows authorities to move forward with security strategies already being implemented.

The governor said officials would present further measures next week to strengthen security across Sinaloa. The southern part of the state will receive particular attention because authorities have observed criminal activity moving into the area.

Domínguez said 15,000 federal personnel are currently deployed throughout the state, working with municipal and state authorities to deter crime and restore peace. She also said Roja Medina, founder of the Voices United for Life collective, and her daughter had left hospital and were receiving protection.

Zazueta's body was found Sunday morning in the Infonavit Las Fuentes neighborhood. Authorities later confirmed his identity after initially reporting that a man had been found shot dead. A card with a message referring to his death was found beside the body, but its contents were not disclosed. The state prosecutor's office opened an investigation. The municipal trustee of Palmillas, Misael Aguilar Espiricueta, has also been missing for six days after being forced from a vehicle under threat.
