Graham's sister appointed interim senator for South Carolina with Trump's backing

In the wake of the passing of U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, his sister, Darline Graham Nordone, has been appointed to temporarily fill his seat representing South Carolina. Governor Henry McMaster officially announced the appointment on Tuesday, following a recommendation and subsequent endorsement from former President Donald Trump.

Nordone, 62, who has dedicated her career to assisting individuals with disabilities find employment, has no previous experience in elected office. Her appointment is in accordance with South Carolina law, which allows the governor to appoint an interim senator when a vacancy occurs. This interim role will last until a special election determines Graham's permanent successor, with Republican primaries scheduled for August and the general election in November.

Governor McMaster stated he contacted Nordone shortly after Graham's death, expressing his desire for her to continue her brother's work. He informed Trump of this decision, who publicly supported the choice on social media, calling it "the best tribute to Graham."

Nordone described the appointment as an honor and believes it aligns with her brother's wishes. The siblings shared a close bond, particularly after their parents' deaths when Lindsey was 22 and Darline was 13, with Lindsey taking on a parental role. She previously supported his 2016 presidential campaign. While Nordone has committed to serving the remainder of Graham's current term, she has not yet declared her candidacy for the special election.
