Grammys introduce 'Asian Pop' category; BTS decides not to submit this year

Global music sensation BTS has announced they will not be submitting their music for consideration at the upcoming 69th Grammy Awards. This decision follows the Recording Academy's recent introduction of a new category, 'Best Asian Pop Music Performance'.

The group shared their decision via social media, stating, "We have decided not to submit for the Grammys this year." They added, "We hope that music can be heard and loved for its own sake, rather than being divided by region or language."

This move is widely interpreted as a boycott of the new category, which aims to recognize popular music originating from or widely recognized in Asian markets, including K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop. Critics have argued that grouping diverse musical backgrounds from Korea, Japan, and China under a single regional umbrella reflects a Western-centric perspective.

Furthermore, BTS suggested that the creation of this separate category might make it harder for K-pop artists to be nominated for the main 'General Field' awards, such as Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year. Their decision highlights ongoing discussions about representation and categorization within major international music awards.
