The cost of feeding two growing boys, plus outings, ice cream, and other activities, far exceeded their carefully managed budget of approximately 220,000 yen (about $1,500 USD) per month, which was already slightly below the national average for retired couples. The breaking point came on the third morning. Exhausted and overwhelmed, the grandmother heard her daughter sternly tell the boys to be quiet during a meeting after they started fighting. This, combined with the relentless demands of the past few days, led the grandmother to admit she could no longer cope. The daughter, realizing she had taken her parents' generosity for granted, apologized, offered 30,000 yen (about $200 USD) to help with household expenses, and left earlier than planned.
