Greater Santo Domingo and San Cristóbal on Green Alert for Weather Trough

The Emergency Operations Center (COE) has placed the National District, Santo Domingo, and San Cristóbal provinces on green alert due to heavy rainfall generated by a tropical wave and a weather trough affecting the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) forecasts moderate to heavy downpours, thunderstorms, and wind gusts in the afternoon for these areas.

Precipitation is expected to extend to other nearby provinces, including La Altagracia, El Seibo, Hato Mayor, La Romana, Monte Plata, and San José de Ocoa, driven by moisture carried by the northeasterly wind. The COE urges the public to avoid crossing rivers, streams, and ravines with high water volumes and to refrain from using recreational water areas in the alerted provinces.

Along the Caribbean coast, small and fragile vessels are advised to navigate cautiously near the coastline and avoid venturing into open waters due to abnormal winds and waves. The COE recommends that these vessels sail with caution near the perimeter of the coast and not venture into the open sea.

Indomet is monitoring two areas with cyclonic potential. One is a low-pressure system hundreds of kilometers west of the Cape Verde islands, and the second is a tropical wave midway between the coasts of Africa and the Lesser Antilles. Both areas have a low probability, around 30% and 0% respectively, of developing into tropical cyclones within 48 hours. A third trough north of the Bahamas is also generating disorganized showers but has only a 10% chance of becoming a tropical cyclone in the next two days and poses no threat to the country.
