Greece battles raging wildfires as flames appear to ease in France

Greece is confronting intense wildfires, particularly in the coastal area west of Athens, where gale-force winds are driving flames through the popular resort of Porto Germeno. Hundreds of firefighters, supported by aerial resources, are working to protect the area. The fire, which began Friday near Agios Vasileios, has prompted the evacuation of approximately 300 people by sea, with further orders issued for nearby towns. Authorities have warned of extreme wildfire risk in the Attica and Evia regions. A wildfire meteorologist estimated that 15 to 19 square miles have been affected, though an official figure has not yet been released. Meanwhile, France has declared its major wildfires "under control" after more than a week of destructive blazes, particularly in the Gironde region. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez reported significant containment work by 1,500 firefighters in the Var department. Spain is also seeing its largest fires no longer make sustained advances, with most evacuation orders lifted, though several hot spots remain active. Portugal has declared its major wildfire under control.
