Greece's Public Liabilities to Private Sector Decrease in June but Rise Annually

Greece's outstanding liabilities to private entities, including households and businesses, saw a reduction of 168 million euros in June, bringing the total to 3.55 billion euros from 3.718 billion euros in May. However, over the first six months of the year, these liabilities have increased by 251 million euros compared to 3.299 billion euros at the end of December 2025.

Specifically, overdue liabilities to suppliers and other private individuals stood at 2.762 billion euros at the end of June. This marks a decrease of 237 million euros from May's figure of 2.999 billion euros. Yet, when compared to December 2025, the total amount is up by 185 million euros, as overdue liabilities were 2.577 billion euros at that time.

Outstanding tax refunds increased to 788 million euros in June from 719 million euros in May and 722 million euros in December 2025. This rise is considered circumstantial, as June is a peak month for income tax return submissions and processing. Only 234 million euros of these refunds represented actual delays exceeding 90 days, a decrease from both May (282 million euros) and December 2025 (338 million euros).

Hospital debts constitute the largest share of overdue liabilities to suppliers. At the end of June, these debts decreased to 1.305 billion euros from 1.519 billion euros in May and 1.397 billion euros in December 2025. Despite the monthly and year-end decrease, hospital debts account for approximately 47% of the general government's total overdue liabilities, excluding tax refunds. Liabilities of the National Health Services Organization (EOபர்) rose slightly to 248 million euros in June.
