Greek Deputy Agriculture Minister Resigns Amid Qualification and Party Ties Allegations

Makarios Lazaridis, who was recently appointed as Greece's Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food, has tendered his resignation after a mere two weeks in the role. The departure comes amid allegations that his appointment was based on close ties to the ruling conservative New Democracy (ND) party rather than on merit or qualifications. This situation casts a shadow over the government's recent cabinet reshuffle, which was itself prompted by a significant scandal concerning the alleged misappropriation of European agricultural subsidies.

In his letter to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Lazaridis maintained his integrity, stating he had led an honorable life and did not wish to tarnish it. He characterized the accusations as attacks from a "toxic opposition" relying on slander and defamation, particularly concerning matters that allegedly occurred nearly two decades ago. The controversy centers on claims that Lazaridis, a 56-year-old Member of Parliament, leveraged his connections within ND in 2007 to secure a position as an expert at the Ministry of Education without possessing the requisite university qualifications.

This resignation represents another blow to the Mitsotakis administration, which has been in power since 2019. It follows closely on the heels of three other government officials stepping down two weeks prior. Those resignations were linked to a European Public Prosecutor's Office request to lift parliamentary immunity in connection with an investigation into fraud involving EU subsidies paid to Greek farmers.
